Castel Wehrburg History

Built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress, castel Wehrburg was transformed over time into a prestigious patrician residence, and remained so until today. In 1300 the castle passed, by marriage, to the Murentheiner, noble family of nearby Andriano. In 1353 he returned to the Wehrburg, but a little over 50 years later, in 1411 it was again and definitively conquered by the Murentheiner. They maintained it until 1798, when the family died out. Since then and for about a century it remained in a state of substantial abandonment, until it was bought and renovated by Albert von Eperjessey, austrian ambassador in Persia.

Then, thanks to the valuable work of recovery of Jakob and Christine Holzner, who bought it in 1957, he found new life by hosting the romantic rooms of a hotel.

The refined atmospheres and the quality of the service make Schloss Wehrburg a place of great elegance: a long crenellated wall surrounds the three buildings of the building, to which is added the medieval church of St. Erasmus. Bovindi, elegant mullioned windows and three-light windows, centuries-old wooden doors, arches and Erker (the characteristic "balconies" of the castles) soften the austere appearance and break the façade, entirely in exposed stone. Bushes of roses and perfectly groomed hedges punctuate the many natural terraces that follow the slope of the hill, creating ideal spaces for reading, sunbathing on the edge of the pool, immersed in a dense thicket, or dining in peace, enjoying a sweet atmosphere and relaxing. The bedrooms are all diversified in the colors of wall paintings and furnishings, ranging from antique to typical Tyrolean furniture.

The Holzner, affable and tireless hosts, offer half board and, on request, à la carte lunches. Alto Adige specialties prevail at the table, accompanied by excellent local wines.
