Castello di Vicarello History
The Castle of Vicarello is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, perfectly set in the lush green of the Maremma in the province of Grosseto, in the picturesque village of Cinignano. Built in the thirteenth century by the Sienese, it assumed an important strategic role in the defense of the surrounding lands. It was part of the Republic of Siena until the middle of the fifteenth century, when it was acquired by the Maggi del Cotone. During this period some works were performed that mitigated the military forms, determining the overlapping of Renaissance style stylistic elements with the pre-existing medieval ones and making it more suitable for noble life. In the mid-sixteenth century it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the castle remained in private ownership in the following years.
A series of restorations lasting years, completed at the end of the last century, have brought the structure back to its former glory. The result is a complex articulated in different parts harmoniously connected and with each other: the heart of the Castle is the courtyard which is accessed by an arch framed by climbing roses. Once passed you are immersed in an atmosphere out of time, where modern and ancient, comfort and nature, history and art are intertwined inextricably.
Guests can stay in the suites or in the detached villa, choosing between different sized accommodation, where furniture and fine furnishings embellish rooms with stone and brick walls. Each window is a painting overlooking the lush nature that surrounds the castle, where the Mediterranean vegetation imposes itself on a modulated passage to terracing, unevenness and hedges of roses and old trees.
Outside awaits the beautiful garden, with cascades of flowers of many colors and aromatic plants, together with some centuries-old cypresses and majestic olive trees to frame the two panoramic swimming pools.
Always open to guests, the kitchen is the beating heart of the castle, where the protagonists are the dishes of the rich local gastronomy: wild boar and game, artisanal salami and homemade pasta are accompanied by wines produced by vineyards near the Castle, with Cabernet, Sangiovese and Merlot make the joys of lovers of good wine.
