Castle Hotel Mailberg History
Mailberg was first mentioned in 1055. Since 1146 the Mailberg castle has been in constant possession of the "Souveränen Malteser Ritter-Ordens" (Sovereign Order of Malta) and is therefore their oldest property in the world. In terms of command function, the castle had served as a spiritual center and for some time as a military center over the centuries.
The eventful history of Mailberg is shaped by wars, which have repeatedly influenced the castle. Mailberg was occupied and destroyed several times during the Hussite wars in the 15th century and during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648).
In the nineteenth century even the Napoleonic wars struck the wine village. In 1945 the last front line ran only 10 km south of Mailberg.
In the history of Lower Austria the "Bund Mailberger" played a significant role. The confederacy was formed in the castle of Mailberg in 1451 and was classified as the first successful corporate confederation against the power of the emperor.
The use of the castle as a hotel and tourist activities and events was a significant development: staying in beautifully renovated rooms and suites, tasting wine in the winery, spending time in the Schlosskeller restaurant and using the elegant rooms of the castle for personal events and seminars.
