Chateau de Jannee History
Located along the Luxembourg-Brussels road, the history of the castle of Jannée has been conditioned by its geographical position south of the Sambre et Meuse groove and its subsequent owners. The complex fits perfectly into a picturesque landscape: located on the edge of a pond, framed by the forest.
From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 17th century it was a small fortified house protected by a moat, serving as a refuge for the people of the neighboring villages during the numerous attacks due to the proximity of the road to Trèves.
After his marriage to Claudine de Rougrave around 1630, Thomas Woot de Trixhe had the fortified house transformed into a mansard-roofed villa with two short and simple wings. The development harmoniously integrated the new buildings with the older ones, thus protecting the historical heritage of the residence
At the beginning of the 19th century, a time of peace and prosperity, the Baroness de Woot de Jannée built a church, ornamental ponds and an English park, also adding a tower to each corner of the castle.
All this still exists today despite the fact that the castle has gone through the last two wars, not without damage. Transformed into a German hospital in 1914 and then into an English hospital in 1944, it was nearly destroyed by a fire in August 1944.
At the end of the conflict the castle regained its main residential function, reopening to the public in the seventies. Inside it is possible to admire a valuable collection of paintings, ancient porcelain and engravings, as well as furniture and furnishings present in the castle since 1840.
