Fortino Napoleonico History
The Fortino Napoleonico is located a few meters from the white pebble beach of Portonovo, one of the most loved and exclusive corners of the Adriatic coast. It is an unparalleled panorama on which this spectacular structure was built in 1810 by the viceroy of Italy Eugenio de Beauharnais on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte, with the strategic task of defending the southern flank of Ancona and implementing military blocks of naval traffic of the enemy English in the Adriatic.
The lantern-shaped plant is a clear sign of the Napoleonic origin and its construction was made partly by recycling the stones of the nearby Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria di Portonovo, which is no longer present today. Returned to the Papal State after the fall of the Empire and subsequently owned by the Italian state - after the battle of Castelfidardo in 1860 - it fell progressively into ruin, left to neglect and insults of the time. In the '60s an important recovery work was carried out, with which the Fortino was completely restored, maintaining however a total respect to the original architectural lines. Turned into a hotel in 1969, it has come to the present day in the midst of its historical and artistic beauty, setting itself as the ideal location for lovers of history, relaxation and nature.
The rooms of the Hotel Fortino Napoleonico are divided into double rooms, obtained from the ancient soldiers' cells, Suites and a Royal Suite with an exclusive panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. Each room is furnished with classic or antique furniture and is equipped with the most modern comforts.
