Kasteel Engelenburg History
Engelenburg Castle is a manor house on a 250-hectare estate located in Brummen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland.
The castle dates back to the Middle Ages and is set amidst striking views given by landscaped gardens and ancient trees in a private forest. The structure was destroyed during the 80 Years War (1568-1648) by Spanish troops. Jacob Schimmelpenninck van der Oye II rebuilt the castle and restored it to its former glory. In 1828 the castle was substantially restored and rebuilt into a comfortable manor house with hand-carved fireplaces, high ceilings and sumptuous rooms.
Engelenburg Castle was used as a private residence until the Second World War. From 1947, Twentsche Bank bought the property and used it as a holiday resort for its employees. In 1988 the Engelenburg was extensively refurbished and converted by Antonius de Lange from an abandoned private residence into one of the finest hotel, restaurant, golf course and conference center in the Netherlands.
