The Schloss Friedberg is located about 100 m above the valley floor of the Inn valley to the southwest of Volders. Perfect location for events and meetings, it offers the chance to experience the 700 years of history of the castle in the luxurious suites where the counts of Andechs, the founders of the castle, once stayed.

Schloss Friedberg History

The elevation in a strategic position above the Inn valley, from which one can see the Martinswand to the west and the Kaisergebirge to the east, was presumably already established before the Roman era, as the shardids suggest. A castle was first mentioned in a document in 1268. It was built around 1230 by the Counts of Andechs, who held the county of Unterinntal as fiefdoms. Originally it was probably only a fortified residential tower as the seat of a provincial provost to monitor the Urbareinkünfte. Over time, other towers were added, in which administrative officials also resided. Heinrich Spieß managed to put all the offices together. As a result, the individual towers surrounded by a common wall were connected by intermediate structures.

After the provincial duchess Margarethe Maultasch had donated the Tyrol to the Habsburgs Rudolf IV in 1363, the Bavarian family Wittelsbach, claiming Tyrolean claims, fell in the Inn valley by plundering several times and tried in vain to conquer Friedberg.

In 1410, the Lords of Spieß joined an investigation supported by the Bavarian Rottenburgers against Prince Frederick IV. Friedberg was, however, quickly reconquered by Duke Friedrich, without being damaged.

In 1491, Emperor Maximilian I later entrusted Hans Fieger Friedberg, who was in bad shape. The Fiegers, who became rich thanks to their participation in the silver mining industry of Schwaz and for a long time one of the most powerful and influential families in Tyrol, renovated and enlarged the castle, built a bastion and created gardens. Around 1500, the keep was 30 meters high and equipped with four bay windows.

After the extinction of the Fieger in 1802, the Counts Trapp 1845 bought the castle for 40,000 florins. Ludwig Graf Trapp had the dilapidated structure restructured between 1847 and 1854. In the process, the residential buildings were raised by one floor, so the battlements fell and the fortified character of the castle was lost.

In the years 2006 to 2009, the castle was extensively renovated. Today Schloss Friedberg as a place to celebrate special events or to hold meetings and conferences. In addition, it offers the possibility of staying in suites, elegantly furnished with period furniture.
