Heemstede Castle (Dutch: Slot Heemstede) is the site of the old castle of Heemstede. The property is situated on the site of the former castle 'Heerlijkheid Heemstede', or 'Huis te Heemstede', strategically located at the mouth of the River Spaarne on Lake Haarlem (drained two centuries ago and called Haarlemmermeer polder).
Slot Heemstede History
The castle was built in 1280 by Dirk van Hoylede of the Vlaardingen region. Built, burned and rebuilt over the centuries, it was demolished for the last time in 1810 after years of neglect. The monumental keeper's house 'Nederhuys', built in 1630, has remained intact as well as the foundations from the Middle Ages.
