The Stüdlhütte hut is located in Fanatscharte, at an altitude of 2801 m at the foot of the Stüdl ridge. The original core of the structure dates back to 1868, while the current modern building was built between 1993 and 1996. The alpine hut belongs to the Oberland (Munich) section of the DAV and offers 106 beds.

Stüdlhütte History

The alpine hut takes its name from the Prague merchant Johann Stüdl, who founded the Kalser Bergführerverein and was therefore decisive for the alpine development of the Glockner region. Stüdl was a prominent member of the Prague section of the Alpine Club and, in addition to Stüdlhütte, also supported the construction of the Neue Prager Hütte in the Großvenediger area.

Johann Stüdl, who came to Kals for the first time in 1867, funded a first hut on Fanatscharte. The building was opened in 1868, and although modest in size it could accommodate twelve people. It formed an important base on the Neue Kalser Weg at the Großglockner, which was an equivalent alternative to the Heiligenblut hike. The Stüdlhütte was the first refuge of the German Alpine Club founded in 1869 and was enlarged for the first time in 1872.

The new construction dates back to the years 1993/96 and is the work of the architect Albin Glaser and the structure combines the need to withstand wind speeds of 200 km / h with high energy efficiency. It is an elongated barrel-shaped building with whose aluminum-coated roof is pulled down towards the wind side, while the three remaining surfaces of the building are covered with wooden shingles. The building is largely self-sufficient thanks to solar thermal and photovoltaic energy,

Most climbers who choose Stüdlhütte as their base have targeted the Großglockner as their tour destination.
In addition to the tours on the Großglockner, there are also the Fanatkogel (2905 m), which rises directly above the hut, from which you can enjoy an impressive view of Großglockner, Stüdlgrat, Ködnitzkees. Both peaks are easily accessible from the Stüdlhütte for hikers, with routes of 15-30 minutes.
