The St. Regis Florence History
It is housed in the Palazzo Giuntini, a nineteenth-century building located in Piazza Ognissanti; once in this place there was a palace belonging to the Giuntini family. Vasari then gives us the testimony according to which the palace would be the work of Filippo Brunelleschi. In the second half of the nineteenth century the building was rebuilt with the aim of becoming a hotel hosting illustrious personalities such as Queen Victoria or the Maharajah Chuttraputti of Kolhapur, who died at a young age in 1870 to whom the monument in the park of the farmsteads. In the hotel died the young Californian student Leland Stanford March 13, 1884, in memory of which the parents founded the University that bears his name. Remembering the fact is on the side of the Lungarno a memory here placed in 1907 by university graduates.
In 1897 the hotel passed under the guidance of Gérard Kraft who undertook improvements and expansions (the fourth floor dates back to this period) and changed its name to the Grand Hotel. Finally, in 1957 the hotel was bought by the Cigahotel and underwent extensive restoration work between 1974 and 1986. Today the hotel has five stars and belongs to an international chain: since May 2011 it has taken the name of The St Regis Florence.
In keeping with the rich artistic heritage of Florence, the 81 spacious rooms and 19 suites are an example of discreet opulence and refined elegance, admiring the myriad of Florentine historical images. Inside the palace we find the winter garden with a portico on two sides and the gallery, covered by an iron skylight and stained glass in Art Deco, the Venetian mosaic floor; the Salone delle feste with its stucco decorations is inspired by the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti.
