The Castello di Pergolato is a splendid example of a medieval castle situated in a dominant position in the valley of the Pesa river, in the heart of Chianti, a few kilometers from Florence. Dating back to the twelfth century and restored to ensure the highest standards of hospitality, it is now able to accommodate up to 15-20 people and can be rented for wonderful stays in the Tuscan countryside.
Castello di Pergolato History
The Castello di Pergolato is a magnificent example of a medieval Tuscan castle, situated on a hill surrounded by cypress trees in the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Built in the late 1100s on the remains of a Roman castrum, it became the property of the Buondelmonti family, already owners of several other castles in the region (Castello di Bibbione, Montefiridolfi, and Castello di Fabbrica). Between 1450 and 1500 the Buondelmonti gradually transformed the castle into a noble residence, making it an interesting fusion of medieval and Renaissance forms, inhabiting it until the disappearance of their last heir Luisina Buondelmonti in 1845.
The Castello di Pergolato has been scrupulously restored by the current owners, adapting it to a high level receptivity. Furnished with precious antiquities, it has a lift and a magnificent outdoor swimming pool overlooking the fortifications and surrounded by Roman-style statues, located in the adjacent loggia.
Consisting of two main bodies joined by a quadrangular tower, it can now accommodate between 15 and 20 people. On the ground floor there is a large hall that divides the castle into two sections: the Conventino, a lounge with a Master Suite and 3 double rooms with bathroom and the Tower, with an atrium, a spacious living room and a pretty loggia overlooking the pool. On the first floor a large recreation room with terrace in turn divides the floor into two parts: the Conventino with 1 double room and private bathroom, 2 single rooms and 2 double rooms with 2 bathrooms; finally, the Tower, which can also be accessed by an elevator, where there is a Master suite with bathroom and a twin bedroom.
There are many celebrities and business magnates who have stayed here (from the U2 rock group to the supermodel Naomi Campbell) attracted by the magical atmosphere of the Chianti countryside, but the Castle is also available to ordinary guests, especially given the opportunity to be rented by large groups.
