Castello di San Fabiano History
Among the suggestive hills of clay south of Siena, surrounded by green countryside, stands the Castle of San Fabiano. Located along the Via Francigena, near the Arbia River, it occupies the same places as a small Romanesque church dating back to the eleventh century. The pilgrims going to Rome who passed through here, along the Via Francigena, could stop near the Pieve del Borgo di San Fabiano. Around the year 1000 the only ford present on the river was placed under control to defend the territory and for this reason the Castle was built, with a high observation tower that was part of a large signaling system among the other towers of border, such as the Torre del Mangia in Siena and that of Radicofani.
The original block is a mighty rectangular tower with a high ribbed base and crowned with elegant trilobic arches on inverted pyramid shelves; above crenellated battlement from lowered arch windows and covered by a pavilion roof. The turrets at the top of the corners of the south side of the aforesaid tower are eighteenth-century additions.
The Castle was used for about a century by the royals of Naples, the Angevins, as a post station for the long journey from Naples to Paris. Since 1600 it was owned by the powerful Sienese family of Forteguerri, whose descendant, in 1800, brought it as a dowry when he married the Marquis Bichi Ruspoli. Subsequently it changed hands several times until the last century when the Florentine Counts bought it to make it their country residence with hunting reserve. The architect Fiorentino Fiorentini, current owner, has transformed the castle and its park into a charming, charming residence for hospitality and prestigious events
During its long life the Castle, as well as the whole village, has undergone numerous architectural interventions, characterizing the appearance and making it a unique structure of its kind. In its rooms there are antique furniture, terracotta floors and exposed beams.
The hospitality is given by 4 rooms and suites, each one different from the other, but all embellished with warm and refined furnishings, fine fabrics, romantic atmospheres and wonderful views of the hills of the Crete Senesi.
