Beer has been brewed in Salzburg's oldest brewery since 1475. Today, the old craft of brewing meets the innovative art of beer and forms the basis for a wide range of beer specialties. Inside the company there is a restaurant and a microbrewery.

Hofbräu Kaltenhausen History

The history of Salzburg's oldest brewery begins with the laying of the foundation stone by the Salzburg entrepreneur Hans Elsenheimer. This took advantage of the geological features of Kaltenhausen. The place owes its name to the fresh air that flowed from the windy tunnels of the Barmsteine.

Here, where the clearest rock spring waters of the Barmsteinen facilitated the production and underground cold rooms in the storage of beer, in 1475 he built the so-called "Kalte Bräuhaus". In 1498 the brewery became the property of the archbishops of Salzburg and became the Hofbräu Kaltenhausen. In 2011, with the realignment and opening of a specialty factory, another milestone was created in the brewery's rich history.

Today in Kaltenhausen the art of beer and craftsmanship come first. The Kaltenhauser range with its refined types outside the mainstream is entirely hand-brewed and now includes a proud list of beer specialties and innovations that inspire with their special taste.

In addition to the main types available all year round - the Kaltenhauser Kellerbier, the Kaltenhauser Original, the 1475 Pale Ale and the Gandolf IPA edition - the team of brewers regularly create seasonal editions. To this end, our brewers orient themselves towards national and international beer styles and develop innovative recipes to transform them with carefully selected raw materials into first-class beers full of taste and personality. The result is pleasant beers like a spicy Belgian Witbier or a Winterbock that heats, but also more unusual creations like a chestnut or Swiss pine beer.

The various beers can be enjoyed mainly in gastronomy. Editions can also be purchased in the Kaltenhausen drink shop.

During guided tours of the brewery, visitors can immerse themselves in the multifaceted history of beer and themed tours such as "Woman & Beer" show surprising new sides to everything related to beer. During beer tastings, beer lovers experience the variety of flavors of different beer styles.

Brewing experiences can be made in the beer courses offered and often arouse the desire for something more. Then there is an apprenticeship as a beer sommelier, which you can also complete in Kaltenhausen.
