Stadskasteel Oudaen was originally a defensive tower, one of the many built in the Middle Ages around the Oudegracht. The castle owes its name to one of its owners, Dirck van Houdaen. In 1758, the Dutch Reformed Church took over the castle and turned it into a residence for the poor and elderly. Two centuries later, the castle housed the Catholic Church's Veritas student association for a few years before being transformed into a restaurant and event venue.
Stadskasteel Oudaen History
A short walk from Utrecht Central Station, along the city's most beautiful canal - the Oudegracht - is Stadskasteel Oudaen, a castle with a great history.
This historic property houses a Grand Cafe, a restaurant, a salon, a brewery, and a number of rooms that can be used for meetings or other events. On the second floor is the restaurant with its unic character, an ideal place to have lunch or dinner during a business meeting, or with another large group. The restaurant can also be rented in its entirety, so all guests can enjoy exclusive access to the space.
In addition to the large café and restaurant, four meeting and event rooms can be booked: the Dirk van Houdaenkamer, the Couwenhovezaal, the Linteloozaal and the Zoudenbalchzaal.
Each room features unique details, each with its own atmosphere and varying capacities. The three rooms on the second floor can be connected into one large space and can be rented together or separately.
Today, Stadskasteel Oudaen is among Utrecht's best-known restaurants. You can enjoy drinks and food from morning until late evening. The castle can also accommodate large groups and meetings and weddings must be booked well in advance. Stadskasteel Oudaen also boasts its own brewery, with several types of beer.
