Burg Mauterndorf History
The sundial above the door of Mauterndorf Castle welcomed traders, scoundrels and travelers in the Lungau region hundreds of years ago. Where once it was a must to open the pocket and pay duty, today visitors can make a complete immersion in the medieval world, visiting the museum, refreshing themselves in the historic brewery or renting the castle halls for special events.
Already in the far 4th century AD instead of today's Castle of Mauterndorf there was a Roman road that passed through Obertauern and led up to the ancient city of the Roman Juvavum (Salzburg). The construction of a customs station is mentioned in a document by Emperor Henry II dating back to 1002. The castle itself is mentioned for the first time in 1253. In the 13th century the Salzburg Cathedral Chapter had Mauterndorf Castle built on the site of the customs station - the building had the function of protecting the municipality of the same name. The Provost of the Cathedral Burkhard von Weißpriach and Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach enlarged the fortified complex in the 15th century. The archbishop particularly loved the castle and used it as a summer residence.
The Castle of Mauterndorf belonged to the Chapter of the Cathedral until 1806 and served as an administrative center, after which it passed into the ownership of the State. From the beginning of the nineteenth century it began to fall into disrepair: in 1894 it was purchased by the Prussian medical captain Hermann von Epenstein who had it completely restored. After several changes of ownership, the castle became the property of the Land of Salzburg in 1968. The historic building was restored in 1979 and 1982 with a total investment of 20 million shillings.
Until 50 years ago only the brewery was accessible at Mauterndorf Castle. The other rooms were closed to the public. As time passed, the desire to found a museum on the history of the Lungau became ever more alive. Year after year, the treasures of this region's culture were collected, which can now be admired in the Lungau landscape museum, at the same opening times as the castle during the summer to remain closed during the winter season.
The historic brewery with its special atmosphere invites you to take a refreshment break. In summer visitors can sit quietly on the sunny terrace and enjoy the mountain landscape of the Lungau. In case of bad weather, family-sized dishes are served in the various rooms of the brewery. The offer ranges from refined specialties, such as game dishes or mushroom dishes, to the most popular delicacies of the little ones. A special experience is the banquet of the knights in the brewery, bookable for groups. The brewery is also known for its vast selection of Austrian wines, which will be presented to you personally by the owner, an expert sommelier.
Mauterndorf Castle offers you an unforgettable backdrop for events of all kinds. Family celebrations, weddings, corporate anniversaries or seminars. The culture hall is available for events such as concerts or theatrical evenings. Spaces for up to 240 people with rooms that can be used all year round in a jewel of the history of art at the foot of the Tauern
