Slot Doddendael is a medieval castle, which is located near Nijmegen in the beautiful Land van Maas en Waal. The castle houses a brasserie for lunch and dinner, but is also a party venue. Surrounded by a moat and adorned with rhododendrons, the castle is a striking and beautiful venue for corporate events or private parties from brunches to weddings, party nights, meetings, dinners, lectures or presentations for 10 to 600 people. In addition to the brasserie in the Slotkelder, there is also a country store with local produce called Dodden-deli.

Slot Doddendael History

Doddendael Castle was first mentioned in 1332. It is therefore often assumed that Doddendael House was built around 1330 and was named after the common tadpole, which was abundant in the marshy surroundings. Doddendael has been described as "borch, huys en hoff tot Ewic".

The castle had already been in the possession of several families, when the Van Stepraedt family bought it in 1489 for 4000 gold guilders (€ 1920). This family kept the castle in their possession with intervals until 1743. In 1526, Doddendael was sold to Duke Charles of Gelre, who used the castle as a fortress. The inhabitants of Nijmegen plundered the castle on a barge and set it on fire. In 1528, the family bought back the burned out castle of Doddendael.

Restoration began, but in 1585 the castle was occupied by the Spanish. Prince Maurits recaptured Doddendael during the siege of Nijmegen and had it burned down. Only the heavy outer walls remained standing. The Van Stepraedt family went into restoration again. The family stopped using it as their main residence in the middle of the 17th century, and when Catholic worship was banned, they made the castle cellar available as a convent. The remains of this can still be seen today.

The current owner, Mr. H. Braam, has been using Slot Doddendael as a party restaurant since 1977, after careful restoration. Since 2012, his daughter Fabiënne Braam and her husband Jan Willem 't Hooft have taken over the management of the restaurant.

A brasserie is located in the castle, but it is also a party venue. Surrounded by a moat, surrounded by rhododendrons, the castle is a striking and beautiful place for all your corporate events or private parties; from brunch to wedding, party night to meeting and dinner to conference; from 10 to 650 people.

Slot Doddendael also has 3 hotel rooms and is idyllic with its moat, orchard and gardens. Walking through its historic walls, it's easy to imagine yourself in the past, but the comfort and level of service are adapted to the high demands of today. Now it is a beautiful location with several rooms, suitable for all purposes.
