Palazzo delle Terme Berzieri

Symbol of the European thermal baths and the town of Salsomaggiore, the Palazzo delle Terme Berzieri is one of the most interesting buildings of the spa, a unique example of Art Dèco Terme.

Dedicated to the doctor Lorenzo Berzieri, who first made a study on the therapeutic properties on the salsobromoiodic waters of the town, it was designed at the beginning of the 1900s in the same area of ​​the saltworks that formerly housed the old spa dating back to 1860.

In 1912 it was the architect Ugo Giusti who took over the planning and the work was continued in 1919 by Galileo Chini and his collaborators after the forced break due to the First World War. After four years of work, the inauguration took place on May 27, 1923.

The concert work of Giusti and Chini, led to that happy fusion of architecture and decoration that is the most fascinating of the building: Chini grafted his oriental influences (he had already decorated the palace of the throne of the Kings of Siam) with the cultural tradition Tuscany: the groups of odalisques, the ceilings with peacock tails, the capitals and the bases to recall the Rajah's India and lions, bas-reliefs and anthropomorphic figures to recall the Assyrian world.

Inside, the atrium decorated by Giuseppe Moroni presents marble decorations, stuccos and wall paintings. On the first floor you arrive passing through the monumental double staircase and speculate and climbing up you can see the stucco ceiling rose windows; at the end of the staircase are the frescoes by Chini, while the fresco by Moroni is visible on the opposite wall.
