Landgoed De Klinze History

When you visit de Klinze, the estate tells its own story through all the paintings, distinctive wall hangings and stone ceiling decorations. The oldest mention of the estate dates back to 1567. At that time, the estate was called 'Oppe Clincke' and was occupied by Johannes van Heemstra and his wife Jantien Hendriksdr. First, it is located on top of a sandy ridge or hill in a peat or marshy area. In this case, this is correct because the building is located on a sand ridge. The second meaning; the most beautiful place, if you removed the buildings and trees you would have a great view.

During the 17th century, wealthy citizens were fascinated by the outdoors. High ranking officials and big merchants were looking for beautiful places not too far from the city where they could have a manor or a new residence built Between 1680 and 1687, the old 'Oppe Clincke' was demolished to build a new manor. The clients were Mr. Hessel van Aysma and his wife Hester van Loo. Hessel van Aysma was a high commissioner and member of the Council of State and his wife came from a rich and powerful family of regents in Leeuwarden. They wanted to build a beautiful country house on the most beautiful spot in Aldtsjerk, with all the trimmings: a tower, a beautiful garden and a boathouse. However, the construction went over budget and 'T SLOT', as the manor was called at the time, was sold to the wealthy judge Hobbe Beardt van Sminia, who was connected to the Frisian Court, for the sum of 9,649 gold guilders. Thus began the long series of Van Sminia in Aldtsjerk.

From then on the house was called De Klinse. The impressive driveway was created in 1722. In old documents you can read that in this year "the workers of the old church" cut the old road and that two hundred "oak poles" were bought and planted in the spring. Many workmen from Aldtsjerk were to come and build in this manor. In the spring of 1723 the money was paid to the "keeper for a trip to Utregt to collect the Beuckenbomen". Next to the driveway, behind the beech hedge, was the path of the common people. When the Jonkheer passed by, the workers would bow their heads and remove their hats. Until 1966, the property remained in the possession of the noble Van Sminia family.

Around the structure in parkland was arranged in 1834 by the well-known garden architect Lucas Pieter Roodbaert, with a four-armed pond. The garden also features a pergola and an orangery.
