The lighthouse was built in 1849 on the northwest cape of the island of Dugi otok, 35 km west of Zadar. Just a few minutes away are the villages of Veli Rat, Verunić and Polje, while the ferry port in Bribinj is 20 km away. The lighthouse is surrounded by a pine forest, beautiful bays and pebble beaches and is considered to be one of the most beautiful on the Croatian Adriatic. Veli Rat offers its visitors a unique experience with an unforgettable breathtaking view that extends from the 40 m high lighthouse tower.
Lighthouse Veli Rat History
The sea around the lighthouse is relatively shallow and is especially good for spearfishing. The best area is in the eastern direction, about 2 miles from the lighthouse, where the rocks overhang the sea. On the west side, the shallow sea is surrounded by the Lagnići rocks, near which there is a sunken ship, a unique tourist attraction. To the east of Veli Rat, the rocky coastline in some places plunges into the depths, which is quite unusual for this part of the island. Nearby is also the islet of Mežanj known as an excellent fishing location.
