Rifugio Roda di Vaèl History
The idea of erecting an alpine hut in the upper Vajolon valley developed within the Welschnofen - Karersee Section of the D.u.Oe.A.V of Welschnofen (Nova Levante) after a first hut had been built under the Cima delle Coronelle.
Already in 1899 the Section had therefore started a negotiation with the Municipality of Vigo di Fassa for the purchase of a portion of municipal land identified in the locality of Sforcella in the Valle del Vajolòn to build the refuge there. Work to build a shelter capable of hosting about twenty people began in the spring of 1906 and on 7 August of that year the shelter was solemnly inaugurated.
The first manager was the mountain guide Anton Plank of Welschnofen. During the interwar period, the refuge was managed on behalf of the SAT by his two sons, first Luis Plank, from 1925 to 1929 and then Josef Plank, from 1930 to 1939 always supported by his sister Rosa Plank in the kitchen.
In July 1921 the hut was entrusted by the Italian military authorities to the Sat which attributed the name "Roda di Vaèl". With the exception of some conservative and consolidation works, the refuge building did not undergo transformations until 1983, when the SAT decided to expand it.
In the early 1980s, the SAT decided that it was time to completely put their hand in the hut. The buildingwas equipped with a new power generator and four eight cubic meters tanks. each, with a pump for the recovery of rainwater. The service cableway was finally built to ensure supplies and downstream transport of garbage. The new refuge was inaugurated on July 13, 1986.
Since summer 2005 the Rifugio Roda di Vaèl has been managed by the mountain guide of Pozza di Fassa Bruno Deluca who had started the management together with his wife Roberta Silva. During the management entrusted to Bruno Deluca, between the autumn of 2007 and during the summer of 2008 the hut has undergone a further important renovation. Among the many works carried out to underline the expansion of the entrance, the construction of a drying room, the external cover with the characteristic shingles and the remaking of all the windows.
Since summer 2011 the management has passed to his wife Roberta Silva who currently manages the alpine hut with the precious help of his "Vael family", that is a group of dynamic and close-knit collaborators who carry on with great commitment and share with them the spirit of welcome , familiarity and above all passion for the life of the refuge
