Sammezzano Castle, surrounded by a large park, is located in the homonymous town near Leccio, in the municipality of Reggello in the province of Florence.
Castello di Sammezzano History
The appearance of the main building derives from the nineteenth-century renovation of a large farm built in 1605 at the behest of the Ximenes D'Aragona family.
The estate to which the castle belongs belonged over the centuries to several important families such as the Altoviti, Giovanni Jacopo de 'Medici and finally sold it to Sebastiano Ximenes. These assets remained with the Ximenes of Aragon family until the last heir, Ferdinando, who died in 1816.
Between 1853 and 1889 Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes of Aragon redesigned the structure and in about forty years had the park and the castle of Sammezzano built, the most important example of Orientalist architecture in Italy.
