Castello Sonnino History
It is made up of a 16th century palace with a tower dating back to the 13th century, medieval, fortified and a member of the Association of Italian Historic Houses and Houses of Memory. Today the property is the result of the commitment of Baron Alessandro and Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino. They restored the villa which also contains the Sidney Sonnino historical archive and founded the "Castello Sonnino International Educational Center" which collaborates with American and Canadian universities, organizing study programs. Castello Sonnino is one of the main producers of the Chianti Montespertoli D.O.C.G. and high quality olive oil.
The Sonnino Castle with its thirteenth-century tower, symbol of the Montespertoli territory, dominates the valleys of the Florentine Chianti. Here, for over two centuries, the Sonnino family has been producing wines and extra virgin olive oils of remarkable character, blending a deep knowledge and love for the land with a constant spirit of research. Today Baron Alessandro de Renzis Sonnino leads the company along this path between tradition and experimentation, giving life to one of the most interesting wines of the new Tuscan generation.
The monumental cellar is located inside the castle of Sonnino. Built in the seventeenth century, it continues to be the ideal place for the aging of wooden wine, barrels and barriques. In old Vinsantaia, the grapes harvested in mid-September by the most skilled workers are dried for 5 months by spreading them on mats or hanging them on hooks, in the traditional way. The Trebbiano grape produces the excellent "red label" of Vin Santo.
Castello Sonnino also offers the opportunity to stay in an exclusive apartment located in the thirteenth-century tower, in the farmhouse located just behind the castle or in a picturesque apartment located along the tree-lined road of the farm. The furnishings have been designed with the utmost care, in harmony with the taste of Tuscan houses.
