Castle Vaeshartelt History
Vaeshartelt has a centuries-old history. Already in Roman times Maastricht was an important traffic hub, with connections to Tongeren and Boulogne, Aachen and Cologne. To the north of the city, at Vaeshartelt, was the junction of the Via Belgica to Xanth and Nijmegen.
Throughout its long history, the country estate has hosted kingly hunts, welcomed important military figures, and housed wealthy families. One of Vaeshartelt Castle's most distinguished residents was the controversial Petrus Regout, the first Dutch industrialist. The country estate is thought to date back to the 10th century, when Queen Gerberga of Saxony donated her estates in Meerssen to the Abbey of Rheims.
It was owned by the Van Muckeln and Cortenbach families and by William II of the Netherlands.
From the 15th century until the 17th century the estate remained in possession of the Cortenbach family.
Later, beginning in 1735, a Swiss colonel, Rudolf Sturler, became the owner of the estate and had the structure remodeled into its current form in 1739.
