The Bogenšperk castle is considered one of the most beautiful Slovenian castles and one of the most important cultural monuments on the Slovenian territory. The castle was built in the first half of the 16th century and bought by the famous Slovenian polygraph and scientist Janez Vajkard Valvasor, who wrote his most famous work Glory of the Carniolan Duchy (1689) in the castle. In the castle museum, in addition to the room dedicated to Valvasor, the printing press and the main Slovenian geodetic collection, you can also visit exhibitions on superstition, Slovenian national costume, hunting and rocks.
Château de Bogenšperk History
Erected on a low hill at a height of 412 m, the Renaissance Bogenšperk Castle is fully restored, and is listed as an important cultural monument of Slovenia. The three-story building consists of four sections from different periods, connecting four towers and surrounding an inner arcaded courtyard. The oldest part of the castle is the north tower, which was originally an independent fortification. A wooden bridge was later added to connect it to to the southeasted tower,, which originally had a defensive purpose and was once much taller than the rest of the building; however, since a fire in 1759 caused by lightning heavily damaged the castle, the tower was never rebuilt to its original level. The castle sits on the rock: one of its attractions is a deep well dug directly into it.
Bogenšperk made the history of the Slovenian nation thanks to the famous Carniolan polyhistorian Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641-1693), who lived and worked in the castle for twenty years. Behind the castle walls all his famous works were created, one of the largest libraries of his time was created and the first collections of rare and interesting objects were gathered. Valvasor's collecting activity in Bogenšperk represents the beginning of Slovenian museums.
In its Renaissance style, Bogenšperk Castle offers a unique atmosphere for various occasions, cultural events, business seminars and presentations, professional and press conferences, banquets and picnics.
