Sevnica Castle is located on a hill overlooking the old town of Sevnica. On the site of today's castle once stood a castle, which was probably built in the first half of the 12th century. It was first mentioned in writing in 1309 as "castellum Liechtenwalde". In the 16th century, the Lutrov wine cellar was also built on the slope of the castle, which is said to have been occasionally visited by Jurij Dalmatin in the 16th century, who was the first to translate the Bible into Slovenian in its entirety. Today, its acoustic rooms are used for music concerts and other events.

Grad Sevnica History

Sevnica Castle is located on a hill overlooking the old town of Sevnica. On the site of today's castle once stood a castle, which was probably built in the first half of the 12th century. It was first mentioned in writing in 1309 as "castellum Liechtenwalde". Unlike many other castles, it escaped destruction during the Croatian-Slovenian peasant uprising in 1573. During this period, the Lutrov cellar was probably built on the castle hill, and is said to have been visited from time to time by Jurij Dalmatin (c. 1547-1589), who was the first to translate the Bible into Slovenian in its entirety. The cellar later became the burial place of some of Sevnica's nobles. Today, its acoustic rooms are used for music concerts and other events.

In recent years, the castle and its surroundings have undergone numerous renovations, so that the castle and the old town below present a beautiful medieval scenery. Sevnica Castle is the central cultural, historical, political and protocol building of the municipality of Sevnica, as well as the center of cultural events.
