Grand Hotel Villa Igiea History
The Grand Hotel Villa Igiea is a historic 5-star hotel located at the foot of Mount Pellegrino, in a magnificent position overlooking the Gulf of Palermo.
Initially built in the late nineteenth century as a private villa by the English admiral Cecil Domville in neo-Gothic style, it subsequently passed to the Florio family. Ignazio Florio then gave it the name of his daughter Igiea and at the beginning of the twentieth century undertook a series of renovations by entrusting them to the famous architect Ernesto Basile while the decorations were executed by Ettore Maria Bergler. The new aspect of the villa follows the style of Liberty, a current that had now infected the rest of the city, with Basile now becoming one of the world leaders of Art Noveau. The structure imitates that of a small manor, with turrets and battlements surrounding an exotic internal garden. The interiors, also in Art Nouveau style, are decorated with floral motifs and graceful female figures, transporting guests in the romantic atmosphere of the Bella Epoque.
