Sächsischer Hof

The building, one of Weimar's best-preserved Renaissance houses, was first mentioned in 1429. It bears the address Eisfeld 12, but its pediment faces Herderplatz, one of the city's oldest squares, dominated by the city church "St. Peter and Paul" and the monument to its most important preacher, Johann Gottfried Herder.
The house, which passed from the Teutonic Knights to the Schwarzburg Counts and later to the Vitzthum, Dieskau and Witzleben families, among others, was a so-called free house. This means that it was not subject to any master service, municipal taxes or military quartering. Good for the respective owners, bad for the city and the state, Duke Carl August must have thought when he abolished these privileges in 1811.


Il nome "Schwarzburger Hof" cambiò poi in un'altra struttura e anche l'"Hotel de Saxe", di proprietà di monsieur Goullon, originario di Metz, durò solo sei decenni. Nel 1870/71 infuriava la guerra franco-prussiana, il patriottismo era in auge e l'"Hotel de Saxe" divenne il "Sächsischer Hof", mantenendo tale nome fino ai giorni nostri

 Nel 1945 nel corso della II Guerra mondiale, la locanda fu gravemente danneggiata da un bombardamento.

L'ospite più famoso ha soggiornato all'Eisfeld 12 quando ancora non esisteva una locanda: Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Lo scrittore e avvocato di Francoforte, già noto per "Götz" e "I dolori del giovane Werther", trovò qui la sua prima sistemazione il 7 novembre 1775, quando si trasferì a Weimar su invito del Duca. Fino al 18 marzo 1776 , visse con il presidente della Camera von Kalb, presumibilmente a titolo gratuito.
