Lauenstein Castle - a jewel of Saxon Renaissance architecture, perched on a rocky outcrop that slopes down to the sea. Lauenstein Castle is home to the Osterzgebirgsmuseum, where you can relive 750 years of Saxon history for a special experience.

Schloss Lauenstein History

Above the Müglitztal stands the castle of Lauenstein, jewel of Saxon Renaissance architecture.

Lauenstein was probably founded around 1200 as a border castle, but historical sources do not mention it. It is uncertain whether the Marquises of Meissen or the noble Bohemian family of Hrabisc will let them dock to protect their land. Even today the ruins on the external rocky spur remind the medieval castle.

The castle is essentially characterized by the Renaissance style and retains the east and south-west wings of the castle, once with three wings. The north wing collapsed in the mid-19th century due to its dangerousness and was never rebuilt.

The impressive Hall of Coats of Arms, the Hall of Birds, the Hall of Music and many interesting details still testify to the passion for the art of the patron Günther von Bünau in the sixteenth century and subsequent generations of the noble Saxon family, the three centuries spent in Lauenstein. High quality portraits - made in the early seventeenth century - were preserved in the chapel and in the tower hall. The park rebuilt in baroque style and the herb garden with its useful and ornamental plants of erzberg type frame the castle complex.

The main castle has been completely renovated and restored in the last thirty years and currently houses the Museum of the Easter Mountains.
