Freudenstein Castle is located on the Schloßplatz on the edge of downtown Freiberg in Saxony. Its history is closely linked to the gamblers' house. After several renovations, the castle is now a four-wing complex housing the permanent exhibition "terra mineralia," a private collection of Swiss minerals. This largest private collection in the world consists of about 80,000 levels of mining services, mainly cabinet pieces, much of which is displayed over an area of about 1,500 m.
Schloss Freudenstein History
A real treasure is hidden at Freudenstein Castle... The Renaissance castle was built in the 16th century on the walls of a 12th-century fortress to protect the town of Freiberg and its silver mining industry. Various features such as the Romanesque round tower, carefully preserved Renaissance staircases and vaulted rooms recall a time characterized by armed conflicts and splendid feasts. But the castle and its history are not the only things that draw people to Freiberg... Freudenstein Castle is home to one of the world's finest mining exhibitions, "Terra Mineralia." More than 3,500 gemstones and minerals from five continents are waiting to be discovered by people of all ages.
