Wildeck Castle, built on the foundations of a 12th-century defensive complex, watched over Zschopau day and night. The carters and merchants who once travelled on the "Czech Trail" between the merchant metropolis of Leipzig and the royal city of Prague found refuge here. Originally they mainly transported salt from the Hallens region in Bohemia, which is why the trail is also called "Salzstraße".
Today only the thickness of "Heinrich", a residential tower and guard more than 30 meters high with walls a meter thick, testifies to the military facility, with the function of protecting the medieval street of distant trade.
