Schloss Colditz History

With its striking white pediments, the castle of Colditz is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of Central Germany of the sixteenth century although already in documents of 1046 there is a mention of a castle owned by Emperor Henry III to his wife.

Throughout its history it has had several periods of glory as a hunting castle, but it is in the sixteenth century, following a fire and subsequent reconstruction in the Renaissance style that the structure acquires its current appearance.

During World War II it was an important prison camp for high-ranking officers of the Western Allies; the maximum security structure, nicknamed Oflag IV, had among his prisoners there were also the grandson of Winston Churchill and the grandson of the then British King George VI.

Secret radio rooms, tunnels dug into the masonry and a glider built secretly are some examples of the stories of the many creative escape attempts told in the "Museum of Escape". The book "The History of Colditz" and its film adaptation have made Colditz famous all over the world.

Today, guests from all over the world can enjoy a princely stay at the European Youth Hostel and the unique atmosphere of Colditz Castle at events and concerts, special exhibitions and guided tours such as "On the trail of prisoners"with a banquet of prisoners.
Up to 171 guests can stay in the 34 bright, comfortable and modern rooms. Numerous conference rooms and common rooms are also available.

There is no shortage of activities with which to spend time at the castle, thanks to a wide range of sightseeing, reading, cycling tours, hiking or boat trips.
