Zamek Gniew History
Gniew Castle is the most powerful fortress of the Teutonic Order on the left bank of the Vistula River. Built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, it was home to Teutonic commanders and in Polish times the seat of starosts, when the office belonged to the Radziwiłł, Zamojski, and Lubomirski families. Gniew's most famous starost was King Jan III Sobieski of Poland, who reigned from 1667, followed by his wife Maria Kazimiera.
