The Hoppe is one of Amsterdam's best-known brown cafes. Located in the lively Joordaan district, this bar, which opened in 1670, offers a wide selection of local beers as well as traditional Dutch gin.
Café Hoppe History
Café Hoppe has been located on the Spui since 1670. Hans van Mierlo laid the foundations of the liberal D'66 party here, and even our recently abdicated Queen Beatrix honored the establishment with a royal visit when she was still a young princess.
Today Café Hoppe consists of two rooms, though it wasn't always that way. The oldest part, at number 18, is an official national monument, both the interior and the exterior, and has therefore remained unchanged over the centuries. The ancient jenever barrels
The ancient jenever and liquor barrels behind the bar bear silent witness to Café Hoppe's varied clientele over the centuries.
In the early 20th century, No.20, a hotel and restaurant, was incorporated into the business.
The 1930s, under the watchful eye and enthusiastic leadership of Harry Mustert marked the beginning of a new era for the illustrious café.
He gave it its present name, united numbers 18 and 20 by making a door in the partition wall and closed the hotel.
Hoppe 'sitting' at number 20 and Hoppe 'standing' at number 18 are still there.
Currently Café Hoppe is run by Jan-Wieger van der Linden and Pepijn Zonneveld who retain its authentic character but manage to attract a new and varied clientele. Café Hoppe remains firmly rooted in its traditions and those of Amsterdam, but keeps its eyes fixed on the future with its iconic hospitality.
