Castello di Petrata History
Located 8 km from Assisi, Castello di Petrata stands in a dominant position among the suggestive hills of the Umbrian countryside, away from the hustle and bustle.
The history of the manor dates back to medieval times, when in 1340 it was built along the Franciscan way that led to the nearby town of Gubbio. Initially born as a villa, it was strengthened by Cardinal Sperello Sperelli to transform it into a real fortress to defend itself against the rival family of the Baglioni. After a period under the jurisdiction of the Sacro Convento, at the end of 1600 it was converted into a country residence by the Tini family. Three centuries later it was bought by the Affuso construction company and in 1996 by the spouses Romualdo Landrini and Giuseppina Orbi who made it the splendid structure that we still admire today.
A long and scrupulous restoration of four years, has allowed to preserve the original architectural features, as well as the spaces and materials, bringing the complex to its former glory. Guests have the opportunity to stay in environments with a unique atmosphere, where modern comforts are well integrated with the ancient elegance that characterizes every room. The 23 rooms, divided into classic, junior suites and suites, are each different from the other for size, decor and for the presence or absence of wooden beams, exposed stone walls and antique furniture. A journey through history accompanied by warm and natural tones, wooden elements and precious fabrics with details such as the headboards of wrought iron beds to embellish the refined rooms.
At the Castello di Petrata restaurant you can discover the rich local gastronomy, with traditional recipes prepared with the best local products: cheese and salami, homemade pasta, extra virgin olive oil and the inevitable selection of wines, protagonists also of tastings.
