Castello di Velona History
Castello di Velona is located on a hill in the center of Val d'Orcia, just a few minutes from the art treasures of Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano and San Gimignano.
The origins of the fort date back to the eleventh century, and the oldest part still visible today is the watchtower of the twelfth century, witness of the clashes between the Republic of Florence and that of Siena. The loggia, on the other hand, dates back to the Renaissance period, when the manor was transformed into a residential villa, a period in which the castle was depicted in the geographic maps frescoed by Ignazio Danti in the Vatican.
A long and scrupulous restoration work that respects every original element has made it possible to transform the Castello di Velona into a luxury relais, equipping it with a total of 46 rooms and suites, a restaurant and a 1,500 m² spa wellness center, making it a unique place devoted to relaxation and good living, attracting both art and history lovers and lovers of good food and great wines.
The Castle's style is warm and welcoming with original terracotta floors, exposed beams, vaulted ceilings and large fireplaces. Each of the 46 rooms is furnished with taste and refinement, with antique furniture, antiques and precious fabrics, all with a suggestive view of the Val d'Orcia and the surrounding countryside.
The traditional Tuscan dishes and the flavors of Italian regional cuisine are the protagonists of the restaurants, to be enjoyed on the panoramic terraces overlooking the valley or, in the cold season, in the elegant indoor lounges. The tavern "Il Vignone" offers a rustic and welcoming atmosphere, with a capacity of 60 places where breakfast is served; the restaurant "l'Abbazia" has instead 120 seats and offers a refined cuisine, but always based on the rich regional gastronomic tradition; in the ancient cloister of the castle it will be possible to taste the best distillates under the starry sky while at the edge of the pool and wellness area the Pool Bar offers refreshing drinks and light solutions for snacks and restorative breaks.
