Hotel Zámek Štiřín History

The first mention of settlement of the area around Štiřín Castle dates back to the pre-Christendom period. The abundance of water found here was the basis for settlement life at that time. The oldest known nation that settled in this picturesque landscape was the mysterious Celts. Only the circular ramparts that protected the tribes from unwanted guests and beast attacks have been preserved from these ancient times. However, the Celts did not inhabit this area only for the water and abundance of food; they also found gold here. However, they left this region for unknown reasons.

Many years later, around 500 A.D., their well-positioned factories were used by the Slavs, who continued their way of life in the area. Another important milestone was the beginning of the 15th century, when a fortress was built near the local settlements in which Emperor Maximilian II stayed overnight in 1562 on his way to Prague for a coronation by the Czech king.

After the end of the long war in the 17th century, the fortress was rebuilt into a castle with a garden. The year 1750 was decisive for the maintenance of the historic buildings at Štiřín, when the local estate was purchased by the elderly Count L. A. Salm-Reifferscheid-Hainspach for his son Johann Franz Wenzl and his wife, Walburg of Sternberg. The Salm family immediately began the complete reconstruction of the castle, and in the late Baroque style, the current appearance of the castle, a three-wing, two-story building covered by a mansard roof, was created. The reconstruction was completed around 1757 with the construction of a castle chapel, which runs through both floors of the west wing.

A two-armed French staircase was built in front of the south façade of the main wing, leading to the regular Baroque garden overlooking the park. The staircase was later decorated with sculptures of small cherubs and four allegories of the seasons. This work is attributed to Matthias B. Braun or to his grandson Anton. Other sculptures, such as the statue of St. Jan Nepomucký in front of the castle gate, date from 1764. During the reign of the Salm-Reifferscheidt family, the entire building was rebuilt into a majestic three-wing Baroque palace, the central wing of which led to a grand staircase, and the castle garden facade had an open French staircase decorated with vases.

He was born in 1895 in Smíchov, Prague, into the family of printing house director Karel Pitter. At the beginning of World War I he volunteered to join the army, where he underwent a great spiritual conversion and became a pacifist and devout Christian. There he promised God that, if he survived, he would devote the rest of his life to caring for children and people in need. This determined his future life and his actions during and after World War II.

During the occupation, together with his fiancée Olga Fierz, he helped Jewish families and tried to provide immediate assistance to children after the war. Immediately after liberation, Přemysl Pitter was commissioned by the Health and Social Commission of the National Council and launched a "blockade action." In the castles of Štiřín, Olešovice, Kamenice and Lojovice and in the boarding house in Ládví, which he turned into sanatoriums, he offered children of different nationalities from concentration camps a chance to stay. Health and social care were intertwined with friendly care, thus saving children's lives. Eight hundred children, half of them of German nationality, passed through the event.

But nothing lasts forever. After 1948, his concept was not accepted, so much so that Přemysl Pitter was forced to emigrate in 1951. However, he did not abandon his vision and continued in refugee camps. He later landed in Switzerland and failed to see his homeland. He died in 1975. For his heroism and in 1991 he received the Order of T. G. Masaryk in memoriam.
