Schloss Gaussig History
Gaussig Castle, the largest and one of the most architecturally significant castles in Upper Lusatia, is a very special retreat where those seeking relaxation and time travelers are welcomed into the elegant surroundings of a truly stately castle.
In the middle of an enchanting landscape, bordered to the south by the Großer Picho, lies one of the largest landscape parks in Upper Lusatia, with an area of almost 30 hectares. The castle, orangery, church, rectory and estate form the center of Gaußig.
The castle is first mentioned in 1245.
In 1696 Major General and Colonel Rudolph von Neitschütz was enfeoffed Gaußig. Around 1700, under then-owner Rudolph von Neitschütz and his wife Ursula, the present baroque-style castle was built.
The palace was remodeled by Christian Friedrich Schuricht in Palladian classicism around 1800: ashlar plaster facings on the elevations, lion heads and fabric draperies in the arched bays, etc. The redesign of the entrance area and the garden hall with herms supporting the covering of the side doors also date to this period.
Around 1803, Henriette Countess von Schall-Riaucour commissioned Scottish landscape architect James Ogilvy, 7th Earl of Findlater, to transform the Baroque garden into an English-style landscape park, which has been substantially preserved to the present day.
In 2005, Gaussig Castle and Park became the property of the family of Andreas Graf von Brühl-Pohl. For more than three years, the castle has been carefully renovated and restored to offer its guests an authentic setting as a family residence and castle hotel.
A warm welcome awaits you as house guests, friendly and personalized service that bridges the gap between strangers and thus creates a sense of well-being and a very personal and private atmosphere. . Schloss Gaußig is one of the very few hotels now cultivating the culture of castle life once again. The owners have brought the house back to splendid life with taste, a sense of artistry and a certain attention to detail.
The chateau has rooms and suites, all of which are personalized and generously designed. Almost every room has a view of the magnificent landscaped grounds. Antiques and high-quality fabrics characterize the image and make each room a place of comfort from another era. Almost all rooms have four-poster beds, made especially for our Victorian-style hotel. In terms of sleeping comfort, too, we have not compromised and have selected materials of the highest quality.
Despite this atmosphere, no one has to give up the modern comforts of a 5-star hotel. Bathrooms with their marvelous period finishes, custom furnishings, and partly freestanding, partly wood-paneled bathtubs will allow one to relax in comfort.
Individuality is also a top priority. Present is a 500-square-meter spa, exclusive to a few other hotel guests who reside in the castle's 16 rooms.
