Sveti Ivan Lighthouse History
The lighthouse Sveti Ivan na pučini (St. John in Pelagius) was built on the islet of the same name in front of the town of Rovinj-Rovigno, and among the locals it is known as The Lantern.
It is the most protruding islet of the small archipelago of 13 islands in front of Rovinj. It is a bare rock 70 m long and 50 m wide. The lighthouse was built by the Austro-Hungarian authorities in 1853.
The octagonal stone tower of the lighthouse, from which there is a beautiful view, is 23 m high, while the building has two apartments for 4 people each. On the lighthouse there is a permanent lighthouse keeper. On the island there is a small landing place and a crane for rather small boats.
The flat rocks of St. John's rock are ideal for sunbathing. Swimmers are advised to be very careful because it is not recommended to move away from the coast of the islet, both for the presence of variable sea currents, and not to disturb the good dolphins. On each of the two opposite sides of the islet there is a beach with a shallow sea.
The depth of the sea around San Giovanni varies from 10 to 40 m, where the bottom is rich in vegetation and numerous species of fish. For this reason, spearfishing and sport fishing are particularly fascinated on this islet. The seabed is very interesting for the numerous shipwrecks.
