The Castle of Cisterna is located in a picturesque medieval village of the same name, a hamlet of Gualdo Cattaneo, on the top of a hill overlooking the valley of the Fiume Puglia. It dates back to the 14th century and today offers hospitality in apartments with a unique charm, furnished with taste and sober style, where the atmospheres are the same of an ancient time.

Castello di Cisterna History

On the top of a hill overlooking the valleys of the torrent Puglia and the Tiber rises the castle of Cisterna, immersed in an area of Mediterranean scrub with oaks, turkey oaks, pines, hornbeams, holm oaks, strawberry trees and brooms, here and there uninterrupted by cultivated fields.
Built in the twelfth century to defend the valley on behalf of the Duchy of Spoleto, it was built in this place after the destruction by Federico Barbarossa of an original castle called Cisterna Vecchia, whose laughter still exists along the Puglia stream. Under the dominion of Perugia until 1378, in 1412 the manor was bought by Ugolino III Trinci. In 1414, Umbria as well as all of central Italy was invaded by the troops of Ladislao d'Angiò, king of Naples, and Ugolino III thus agreed with Florence, placing itself under its jurisdiction. The castle remained in the Trinci until 1441 and subsequently passed from one family to another (Baglioni, Bennicelli, etc.) and then remained under the protection of the archdiocese of Todi until 1980.
Today's building consists of the central part of the formwork, the highest and fortified section of a manor, defensive walls and a square-based tower about fifteen meters high, to which a small group of houses flanked. Lords of what was one of the countless Lombard strongholds - and among these certainly one of the most significant and best preserved - are today the Lorusso, who have destined a wing of their home to hospitality. Of the five renovated apartments with a kitchen, two are located in the tower of the castle. The atmospheres and the warmth of the welcome are those typical of the Umbrian country houses, with furniture in poor art, simple taste, that do not detract from modern comfort.
Although not having a restaurant or sports facilities, guests of the castle can take advantage of an agreement with a farm located three kilometers away, where the proposed cuisine is strictly regional and based on local products; also, always at the farm, we organize tastings, cultural excursions or trekking and hunting trips. The company is also equipped with swimming pool and riding stables.
