The Castle of Stefanago, a medieval jewel nestled in the hills of the Oltrepò Pavese, is home to a farm that next to the cultivation of vines, barley, spices and the cultivation of wild pigs for the production of salami Varzi, offers 4 suites created in a building adjacent to the castle with formula B & B. Castello di Stefanago History
From a hillock of the Oltrepò Pavese, the Castle of Stefanago dominates the gentle valleys of the Coppa and Schizzola rivers, surrounded by a small agricultural village in the south. According to an ancient legend, it was built because of a mysterious and diabolical spell, which in the three night time brought the great stones placed at its base up here. Between history and fantasy, around this construction arose also another story, in some respects inspired by the Homeric tale on the origin of the Trojan war: for centuries, in the castle and in the surrounding valleys the screams and the roar of the battles continued to be heard between the lords of Stefanago and Nebbiolo, who came into conflict because of the kidnapping, by the first, of a beautiful girl, novella Elena.
Legend aside, in all probability the building was built between the eleventh (the main tower) and the fourteenth century (the wings of the castle, softened by windows with pointed arches). Restored in the fifteenth century, it was owned by several noble families, including the Sforza, the dal Verme and the Malaspina.
Today the castle houses a farm, in the middle of an estate of 130 hectares, consisting of woods, meadows and rows of vineyards strictly cultivated with organic methods. In the fifteenth-century wing have been obtained suites for a Bed & Breakfast accommodation, with simple and comfortable furnishings but suitable for the context.
The ancient cellars, with terracotta vaults and stone walls, the courtyard with the stage and the Italian garden are some of the spaces available for organizing events. At 200 meters from the manor house is instead the farmhouse La Boatta, an old farmhouse that houses the company restaurant, six double rooms in rustic style and offers various solutions for ceremonies and meetings of all kinds and levels. The dishes, prepared with the products of the garden and accompanied by corporate Doc wines, are those typical of Lombardy.
