Monastero Fortezza di Spirito Santo History
The Monastery of Santo Spirito was founded in 1222 by Placido da Roio, who lived for years as a hermit in a cave in the mountain of Ocre; built on land donated by the feudatory of Ocre, Count Bernardo d'Ocre, and is the first settlement of the Cistercian Order in the valley of L'Aquila. The Monastery was aggregated in 1248 to the Abbey of Civitella Casanova and after this date the building was enlarged adding the church to the complex. The monastery is inhabited by the Cistercians for the following four centuries until, in 1692, the suppression of the small monasteries of Pope Innocent X came.
In the seventies of the last century the Superintendence carried out work to restore the structure from the insults of the time and a further intervention in more recent years allowed the recovery of the monastic environments destined to tourist and cultural activities.
The rooms in the monastery are 12, each named with a wind, distributed on the two dorms on the first floor of the structure; essential furnishings but equipped with every comfort, have wooden furniture, private bathrooms and all have a spectacular view of the valley below.
On the upper floor there are some lounges and several stone rooms with a splendid panoramic loggia and an Archaeological Exhibition in the Sala Capitolare with important finds from both Normans and Vestini.
The hotel's strong point is the restaurant, where in an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere, you can enjoy the authentic and genuine cuisine of the mountain Abruzzo, where the flavors of the past come back to life with homemade pasta. , seasonal vegetables, typical sweets, local DOC wines and aromatic liqueurs.
The Monastery is proposed as a fascinating location where to organize magical events: in addition to the striking interior rooms there is a cloister outside with wonderful roses and jasmine fragrant, with a lush lawn overlooking the breathtaking landscape.
