Sextantio Santo Stefano di Sessanio History
Santo Stefano di Sessanio is an ancient fortified village located at about 1,200 m altitude situated in the Gran Sasso National Park. It is certainly one of the pearls of Abruzzo and has obviously been included in the prestigious list of "The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy" for its architectural decoration and stylistic homogeneity
The historic center, of medieval origins and of incredible beauty, is built entirely of white limestone, whose whiteness has been rendered opaque by time, and is dominated by an imposing cylindrical tower (called the Medici) for the presence of the heraldic coat of arms famous Florentine family De 'Medici, who was feudatory of the village during the sixteenth century.
Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is part of a project of recovery and reawakened tourist nation that has led to the restoration of the ancient architectural heritage of the village: all the original structures have been preserved and for the works have been used only architectural materials of recovery and re-proposing the furnishings typical of the territory.
The streets that cross the village, to be traveled strictly on foot, are presented in various forms, from the steep staircase that leads to the church of Santa Maria in Ruvo (XIII century) to the tortuous pavement that leads to the Tower dating back to the fourteenth century. The elegantly elegant loggias, the finely worked windows and the arched portals date back to the Medici period. The coat of arms of the Signoria of Florence stands out on the south-east entrance, which has left a tangible sign of its refined civilization in this mountain.
The 27 rooms all have views of the mountain panorama or the characteristic inner alleys, are furnished with simple simplicity, in harmony with the traditional mountain furniture of the past, but without giving up modern comforts.
The structure also offers a gourmet restaurant that offers the typical dishes of the area cleverly revisited by the chef Luca De Bernardis, as well as a wine cellar and a tisaneria.
Near the town you can visit the cemetery church of Santo Stefano and the picturesque church of Madonna del Lago, located just on the edge of the small lake at the foot of the town. Another monument near Santo Stefano di Sessanio is the Rocca Calascio castle, one of the highest castles in Europe (1,512 m).
