The Pulitzer Amsterdam is a unique blend of luxury, traditional and modern Dutch craftsmanship hidden among the city's iconic canals.
Pulitzer Hotel Amsterdam History
In the 17th century, the Netherlands flourished; it was the place to be. This prosperous era of Dutch history saw: wealthy merchants build the beautiful buildings we still admire, the Dutch East India Company became the world's first multinational corporation, Rembrandt was changing the face of the art world with nothing but his brush, and Manhattan was founded - then known as New Amsterdam.
In 1960 Peter Pulitzer (grandson of Pulitzer Prize founder Joseph Pulitzer) saw great potential in Amsterdam's beautiful but dilapidated canal houses. He bought twelve houses along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals and created Amsterdam's oldest five-star hotel, the rest -as they say- is history.
Over the course of thirty years, the hotel has grown from twelve restored canal houses to twenty-five. The Pulitzer Amsterdam continues to pick up elements that add to its unique and vibrant character: the intricate maze of historic houses, the exclusive restaurant, the gardens, and the annual floating concerts on the Prinsengracht.
In 2015 and 2016, the property underwent a substantial renovation, reinventing historic elements and classic elegance with contemporary style, resulting in a perfect combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern amenities
