The Rifugio Croda da Lago - Gianni Palmieri is an alpine hut located at an altitude of 2,046 m in the municipality of Cortina d'Ampezzo, it stands at the foot of the homonymous mountain and on the shores of the suggestive Federa lake.
Rifugio Croda da Lago History
The Rifugio "Barbaria Hütte" now "Croda da lago" was built in 1901 by the mountain guide Giovanni Barbaria near Lake Federa, at an altitude of 2046 m.
The land and timber for the construction of the building was granted by the Municipal Representation and among the clauses you can also read the final one: "it is recommended not to abuse it by giving drinks to the shepherds" in reference to the Federa hut located no more 2 km from the refuge.
In 1905 Barbaria decided to sell the building to the D.Oe.AV section of Reichenberg, in fact, despite the numerous climbers who frequented the area, the earnings did not live up to Giovanni's expectations (it seems that no friendly visitor was refused to drink, of course for free).
The building was immediately modernized and enlarged by the new owners, and on 31 August 1905 the refuge was inaugurated and renamed "Reichenbergerhütte".
In 1920 the world war ended, the alpine hut will pass from the Reichenberg Section to the CAI Cortina Section and will take the name of "Rifugio Croda da lago" until 1947.
In 1994 the management was entrusted to the mountain guide and "Scoiattolo" Alverà Modesto "Pazifico" who manages the alpine hut still today together with his wife Monica Molin and his 6 children.
In recent years improvements have been made to the facilities from time to time, to make the alpine hut more and more comfortable.
