Schloss Gobelsburg History
The oldest archaeological finds on the site of Gobelsburg date back to around 4000 years ago and a castle of this name is mentioned in 1178. The Renaissance structure at the base of the current facade of the castle was renovated in Baroque style in 1725. Having belonged to various Aristocratic families, castle and land were sold to the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Zwettl in 1740 and have since been in his possession. In 1996, current executives, Eva and Michael Moosbrugger, assumed responsibility for the building and the cellar, which is headed by Michael Moosbrugger.
The castle's wine production dates back several centuries. After taking over in 1996, Michael Moosbrugger began to reform the work of vineyards and winemaking according to strict quality standards. Of the 39 hectares of vineyards around the village of Langenlois Kamptal, the Gobelsburg vineyards are the rocky and terraced vineyards of Zöbinger Heiligenstein and Grub, mainly for the Riesling, as well as the vineyards of Lamm and Gaisberg, located in the plains, whose sandy soils and clayey soils are mainly cultivated with Grüner Veltliner. The Grüner Veltliner variety constitutes 50% of the total production, followed by Riesling, St. Laurent, Zweigelt and Pinot noir and Merlot. The work in the vineyard is performed exclusively by hand and mainly follows the biological practice.
