The Becherhaus (in Italian: Rifugio Gino Biasi) is an alpine hut located at an altitude of 3195 m s in the Ridanna Valley in the Upper Isarco Valley on the South Tyrolean side of the Stubai Alps, on the Malavalle glacier
The hut offers space for about 100 people and, with the chapel listed "Maria im Schnee", has one of the highest shrines of Maria in the Alps (see Rocciamelone). The Becherhaus is the highest refuge in South Tyrol.
Becherhaus History
The top of the Becher was climbed for the first time on August 23, 1886 by C. Langbein with D. and J. Pfurtscheller. Six years later, when Karl Arnold, the president of the DÖAV section of Hanover, was at the top for the first time, the idea of a hut on the Becherfelsen was born. The project was supported by the DÖAV, but none of the 118 sections of the Alpine Club dared to undertake this daring project. Finally, thanks to Arnold's persuasiveness, the section of Hannover decided in January 1893 to devote himself to building the structure.
With the name, originally the Biasi al Bicchiere hut was called "Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Schutzhaus", the DÖAV wanted to thank the Prussian and Bohemian sections for their support. The most important people during the construction phase were Ridnaun's innkeeper, Stefan Haller, who mainly organized the transportation of materials, and the master carpenter Johann Kelderer, who designed the hut. The construction phase began in March 1894. it was completed in August. Finally, the inauguration took place on the 18th of the month, the birthday of Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The hut was enlarged in 1900 and 1910. In 1922 the section of Hanover was expropriated by the Italian state and until 1979 the refuge was occupied by the military. In 1987 and 1989, the hut was rebuilt, enlarged and then managed by the Veronese section of the CAI.
Together with 24 other huts expropriated by the state, the Becherhaus became the property of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - Alto Adige in 1999; at the end of 2010, the concession for their management by the CAI expired. Since 2015, the king of South Tyrol has been supported in the management of the refuge by a joint commission, in which AVS and CAI are represented in addition to the public sector.
