The Hotel Saltauserhof dates back to the eleventh century and is one of the oldest resting stations in the valley, between the Burgraviato area and the Val Passiria. Hotel Saltauserhof History
Among the rooftops of the village of Saltusio, a small town north of Merano, the white-red battlements of Saltauserhof stand out, known as the most representative Schildhof (maso scudo) in South Tyrol. Built in the eleventh century, it was the first of a series of eleven farmsteads located in a strategic position along the banks of the Passirio and was a sentinel on the road leading to the Giovo pass. The squire owner had the obligation of arms in the army of the prince, but enjoyed economic, legal privileges and the right to hunt and fishing: the latter survives along with the right to wear shield and halberd on the occasion of solemn parades. In 1809, at the time of the Tyrolean uprising, Andreas Hofer held frequent councils with his Tyrolean peasants within these walls and in some cases the deep cellars of the building served as a temporary prison for captured opponents, including French and Bavarians.
Saltauserhof is also one of the oldest hotels in the area and has always been an authentic testimony of the culture of the South Tyrolean stately homes. The rooms are of different types but all are furnished in style, including those in the newly built annex. Particularly striking are those in the central body, which overlook corridors and rooms with antique furniture, antiques and characteristic tiled stoves.
The restaurant is oriented towards both local and international dishes. In the cellars, used as a prison for the rebels of the Tyrolean uprising of 1809, a wine shop was created worthy of true connoisseurs, but where even the neophyte, guided by expert sommeliers, can approach the culture of wine, local and otherwise. And it is always here that Tyrolean snacks are organized and, in the autumn, castagnate with the accompaniment of music and popular dances.
