The Castle of the noble family of the Capua rises in the historical center of Gambatesa, in a dominant position in the valley of the river Tappino, between the mountains of Molise and the Tavoliere delle Puglie. A medieval manor transformed into an elegant mansion in the Renaissance where history, art and landscape intertwine with ancient flavors.
Castello di Capua History
Strategic point for the control of the transhumance routes between Puglia and Abruzzo, it made the wealth of families who succeeded each other as lords of the place.
A typical medieval fortress with a massive appearance, it has undergone many transformations that, over time, have made it a fine stately home. The Capua family, which became its owner in 1484, made it that artistic jewel that we can still admire today.
The internal rooms are mostly embellished by the important frescoed cycle commissioned by Vincenzo di Capua and built in 1550 by Donato da Copertino (Decumbertino), a follower of Giorgio Vasari; through mythological and biblical episodes, characters from ancient history, landscapes and allegories, the virtues of the Capua family are enhanced.
