Castello di Leonina History
Located between Siena and Asciano, in the heart of the famous Crete Senesi, Castello di Leonina Relais is a manor dating back to the 13th century, once the residence of Cardinal Fabio Chigi, who later became Pope Alexander VII. First built as a fortified complex and during the 15th century as a Renaissance castle, the building was transformed in the following centuries into a fortified farm, until the twentieth century and a slow decline. And only in 2003, after long and careful restoration, that the castle returns to live as a hotel relais, returning to offer its guests magical moments of a bygone age.
Immersed in a beautiful natural setting, the complex has a square brick plan surrounded by a curtain wall along the west side and along the north side where the center is interrupted by the arched portal in travertine. Observation towers rise up at each corner, with the northeastern turret more robust than the other three.
