Château de Wildenfels

Schloßstraße, 2 - 8134 Wildenfels - see map - Contact
A fortified castle was built by the lords of Wildenfels as early as 1200 to the west of the hill. The oldest parts of the castle are still visible. These are the remains of a manor house that was later converted into a granary. In contrast, the architectural complex as we see it today was built later, largely during the Renaissance. It includes a chapel, main building, outbuildings and various other parts.

Château de Wildenfels History

Wildenfels Castle stands on a mountain spur above the town. Even from a distance, you can see the white facade shining above the green treetops. With its imposing silhouette it characterizes the cityscape, and its cultural treasures in particular have made the historic building a center of attraction in the Erzgebirge.

Numerous exhibitions in the museum facilities and contemporary gallery invite visitors to linger. Art lovers and visitors to West Saxony are offered a richly informative overview.

The "Blue Salon," with its extraordinary silk wallpaper, shines in new splendor after restoration. With the finest silk and the most elaborate embroidery, one can admire a unique interior design dating back to the late 18th century.  Definitely worth a visit is the neoclassical castle hall with the wedding hall and the count's library. Especially noteworthy are the ceiling paintings by Christian Leberecht Vogel. As a court painter, he left his mark on Wildenfels Castle with numerous portraits of the count's family, frescoes and ornaments. In addition to his pronounced artistic interest, he shared with his brother Friedrich Magnus I a free-spirited attitude, which is still reflected in the castle's design today.

The castle was owned by the Counts of Solms-Wildenfels from 1602 until 1945, when they were expelled. The castle was then converted into social housing. It was restored in the 1990s and now includes new housing and rooms for rent. Part of the castle can be visited.
